Me, My Roots

As I believe it is important to know about your background, here is a little bit about Me, My Roots…

I was born and raised in Togo, a country in West Africa. Togo has 39 distinct spoken languages, an estimated 37 ethnic groups ( but probably more…)

My parents are both native of north Togo, the city of Dapaong, but we had always lived in the capital Lomé, in the south of Togo. The majority residents of Dapaong are part of the Gurma nation, who are descending from the Mossi Kingdom.

Along side with Mali Empire and Songhai Empire, the above map shows the location of the former Mossi Kingdom territory in the 15th century which included parts of the actual Ghana, actual Burkina Faso, actual Togo, actual Benin and actual Nigeria. So one of the languages derived from the Gurma nation and mainly spoken in Dapaong is Moba. In the North East of Ghana, it is the Bimoba language that is spoken. It is very close to Moba but mixed with English. And so I pleasantly discovered that so far, I am able to understand Bimoba through their YouTube channel that I have watched (yayy 🙂 !!). Moba is then part of the Gur languages family.

However, since after the division of nations, France was the last colonizer of Togo, before its independence on April 27th, 1960, the official language is French.

Thus I learned to speak and write in French at school. I also learned to speak Mina since it is the spoken language of the majority population in the city of Lomé. But at home, Moba was of course the official and main spoken language to put it that way. Our parents had taught us to speak Moba and of course we also learned with the extended family speaking around us.

Later on, when I had my first English class in primary school, it became my favorite class and I always thrived in it, unlike math classes which I definitely had to work harder to have “Okay” notes in general lol!! It will only be later on in my life journey, that I then understood why I had this interest and kinda attraction to English language beside the facts that I genuinely, naturally love languages (TBP).

On a more personal level, I definitely define myself as a Humanist. I have always enjoyed observing the behavior, acts, actions, spoken words, gestures, etcetera, of my surroundings or the absence of them. It has  nourished my curiosities, questionings and critical thinking coming from a  genuine harmless place. And all of that makes me learn, which I love. I can say that ‘’I am addicted’’ to learning, to Knowledge, provided my capacity to receive, stock, remember and use that knowledge. I have a passion for Humans, Humanity; how complex and simple we can be and Are. One of my fav phrases I have heard that I feel, describes and links me to that Humanity traits is that ‘’ I am simple in my complexity’’. I love to read, mainly sociology, anthropology, and cultural themed books which of course also leads me to history books among others.

In the process of creating my Art-Blog, I have chosen to write mainly in English, in the beginning at least, to express myself. While in a parallel process of my self-taught Moba language learning, there will be occasional posts completely in Moba, as for Moba being my Cultural legacy, therefore an important part of MY Identity. The other reasons for this being that, first: having efficiency in mind and that 2nd: learning to speak better in Moba and write it, is a personal challenge I have set myself to take upon.

Obviously the blog will create and allow a space to share thoughts, knowledge, agreement and disagreement vice versa on the subjects, in a RESPECTFUL manner.

So this is a little bit of  who I am and a part of my Roots.

An introductory post which will lead us to more interesting discoveries and subjects to explore and share upon.

Tell me a little bit about you ….
